If you have ever dreamed of owning an MP5SD, PTR’s new 9SDM is here to make your dream come true.
There have been a few MP5SD clones over the years, but they have either been priced out of ownership or are merely visual replicas of the design. Now, PTR has approached the MP5SD with a new and improved design that mimics the original but is set up for a new era of suppressors.
Integrated Suppressors
The PTR 9SDM-A has the potential to be a three-tax-stamp gun, although that still totals $0 in NFA tax money, thanks to the elimination of the tax. As PTR expanded most of its lines into SBRs with the new $0 tax, the company wanted to address an integrally suppressed version of its MP5 clone.

PTR has its own line of 3D-printed VENT cans that do a great job of suppression, but the integrated suppressor is a different subject. A normal suppressor vents gas at the muzzle, prevents the rapid expansion, and works to tame the sound of the round as best it can at the muzzle. Normal suppressors are quiet, but supersonic ammunition will always have a supersonic crack.
There is your second stamp.
An integrated suppressor bleeds off gas through a ported barrel. This helps the gas to escape and expand easily, dropping the pressure behind the bullet, making supersonic ammo naturally subsonic. Thus, an integrated suppressor is significantly more quiet than a standard thread-on suppressor.
Put a stock on it and you got yourself a three-stamp gun.
PTR 9SDM
The PTR 9SDM features a ported barrel with a “suppressor” shroud around the barrel. I put suppressor in quotation marks, because in and of itself, it is not a full suppressor. The shroud works in tandem with the ported barrel to vent and capture the gas from the round as it leaves, just like the original MP5SD design.
Additionally, the end of the shroud has standard HUB threads, so you can put any HUB-compatible suppressor on the end. Of course, PTR has a line of excellent suppressors, including the 9mm Vent 2, but designers made sure that people who already have other 9mm suppressors can use them.
The PTR 9SDM-B has a one-tax-stamp suppressor that is specific to the 9SDM, with the ported chamber and suppressor being one piece. This impressive design is not only innovative, but also effective. While many gun owners have suppressors, few have integrally suppressed firearms.
Summary
Suppressors are safety devices designed to reduce issues like TBI, hearing loss, and gas venting into the shooter’s face. An integrally suppressed firearm is even quieter and enhances those safety benefits. The PTR 9SDM was one of the most impressive firearms of SHOT Show 2026.
